“Here is something that really and truly MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL – the great web design rip off. That’s when a small company, and sometimes a large company too, is charged THOUSANDS, sometimes tens of thousands, by some web designer who produces something that looks vaguely impressive to someone who doesn’t know anything about web marketing, web presence and web design, hands it over, probably even charges some hideous site maintenance fee – and the web design company didn’t do a single thing for SEO (search engine optimisation), didn’t do one thing to actually get some TRAFFIC TO THE SITE!!

A place on the web where one person or a company shows what they do, and WHERE VISITORS COME TO INTERACT WITH THAT PERSON OR COMPANY.
So what are the site designers that charge a small fortune and sometimes, a LARGE fortune for throwing about a few bits of flash and a load of white space with unreadably small fonts that are probably also flash and not text that the search engines could pick up NOT DOING?

The first, worst, and foremost SIN is that they are NOT THINKING THAT SEO IS THEIR BUSINESS.

Well if it isn’t theirs, WHOSE is it, may I ask?!

If you are a car manufacturer, do you sell customers cars that don’t have an engine? Don’t even have a place to put an engine INTO if you were to buy it, tow it away and find someone else who specialises in engines to put one in so you can DRIVE your car?!

And if you do tow it to the engine manufacturer, they’ll take one look and say, “Well this is useless! I can’t put an engine in that! You need to throw that whole car away – sorry it cost you $75,000 … you have to start all over again … design in the engine from the start …”

ANY WEB DESIGNER WHO IGNORES SEO IS A RIPOFF MERCHANT. PERIOD.

Web design is NOT about pretty pictures.

It is about making sure you have something that looks good and that WORKS AS A WEBSITE – attracting visitors.

Search engine optimisation, for EVERYTHING in the site, every tiny teensy piece of text, every image, every tag and every title, every meta tag, image label, css command, every “white space”, every piece of flashy flash, ALL OF IT must be that engine that drives the visitors to the website, starting with the search engines, of course.

If it is not, you are totally wasting your time and your money!

But SEO is only a part of the game, web designers also fail to think about where the traffic for this site is going to come from.

THERE MUST BE A STRATEGY FOR BRINGING TRAFFIC TO THE SITE that is a part of the design process itself – from the domain name onwards.
Now I’m not saying that there aren’t good web designers out there who properly consult with their clients and produce a website that delivers a REAL WORKING WEBSITE (and in brackets INCLUDES VISITORS!) because there are, but too many companies and individuals are horribly ripped off every single day by those web designers who only know about design, and nothing about actual realities of a working website (which has visitors!).

And that brings me to the last of the three things that bad web designers do not do.

This is to consider the value of the site to the visitors and what to put on it to ensure repeat traffic and visitor satisfaction, visitors have so much choice these days, they will simply leave, if ever they came in the first place.

So if you’re thinking of looking for web design in Newbury, for the love of God, PLEASE make sure that your web designer or web design company IS CLUED UP to that whole deal about having a plan as to how to get visitors and have them be satisfied enough to want to do business with you!!!!

Ask them the hard questions: “Where will the visitors come from? How does this site serve the visitors? How is this reflected IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE SITE’S DESIGN?”

If the designer or sales man looks at you as though you’d come from another planet, LEAVE.

If the designer or sales man tries to tell you that you’re wrong and that it isn’t THEIR JOB to deal with that whole SEO/visitor acquisiton/satisfaction can of worms in many fine sounding and likely technically confusing words, LEAVE.

Do NOT hand over a single penny to anyone, and never mind thousands of pounds of your hard earned cash, until and unless you are convinced that these people know what they’re doing, and THEY CAN SHOW YOU SITES WHICH ARE PERFORMING as a website should – one that has VISITORS, that turn into actual CUSTOMERS.”
